Aarhus, the 2nd largest city in Denmark, is about to introduce trams in the form of a tram-train or light rail system. They were supposed to enter normal operation Friday but have been delayed because the Danish traffic directorate find some of the security measures and documentation of the project to be lacking.
The system will be running Stadler Tango and Variobahn trams in standard (1435mm) gauge. Because it uses the same gauge as the rest of the Danish train network, the system will be running partially on existing train tracks to reach the towns of Grenaa and Odder and thus providing them with a local train that integrates into the tram network when it reaches the city.
When the trams begin running this will mark the return of trams to Denmark since the Copenhagen tramway was closed and demolished in 1972 and will also mark the 3rd time Aarhus has introduced trams, the first tram system being a horse drawn system 1884-95 and the second being an electrical system 1904-71.
A similar system is planned for Odense, Denmark's 3rd largest city, while the capital Copenhagen will continue to focus on its subway system.
