Some fireless steam locomotives are still in use these days in very niche uses such as industrial shunters or as mineshaft locomotives.
The main reason behind the use of fireless steam locomotives is because these things do not have any combustion going on (instead, steam is loaded into the locomotive at set points), and they have a very high amount of tractive power, which makes them more useful than battery operated shunters.
Especially in the chemical industry, where volatiles are being loaded into tank cars, the risk from a diesel engine is too high, so these fireless steam locomotives are still necessary.
With that said, steam locomotives will only ever come back if they replace the boiler with nuclear fission reactors for superheating the water.
