For instance, you could brake them in a pothole or if the front wheel is coming down from some sort of step. I don't always ride on the asphalt. Besides, the color of longer mudflaps won't match and I still want to commute in style even in shitty weather conditions. Classic style is one of the reasons why I bought this bike in the first place.
And in case of heavy rain I use shoe covers and rain clothes
