>>1246710>>1246714In 2008, Northern Ireland Railways considered replacing the Enterprise stock with higher speed DMUs and Irish Rail who co-owns the service with NIR, at least since the 1990s, agreed. NIR approached a number of manufacturers for tenders, with the idea being a faster train moving to hourly departures from both Belfast and Dublin. NIR settled on the Bombardier Transport Super Voyager DMU which was capable of 125 mph on the lines in GB.
Irish Rail rejected the idea of the Super Voyager, it was suspected due to costs, because any new Enterprise stock would have needed to be bought in equal parts by Irish Rail and NIR (with EU funding as well).
A number of concepts were thought of but nothing came of it.
In 2016, after no movement on replacing or improving the rolling stock, an Interreg grant from the European Union was applied for and then approved for the renovation of the entire Enterprise rolling stock. The work was split between Irish Rail who renovated the Class 201 locomotives and NIR who renovated the De Dietrich coaches. During 2016, the Enterprise Service was taken over by Irish Rail Class 22000 DMUs made by Hyundai Rotem and Tokyu Rail Corporation, the train Irish Rail wanted to use as the Enterprise replacement in the 2010s (and NIR objected to). By the end of 2016, the renovated Enterprise stock is now back in service and now looks absolutely nothing like it did, meaning that any comparable features to the Eurostar were gone, and that the Enterprise's interior resembles a regional train more.
