>>1939735Planes are still always cheaper and faster in the majority of cases. I love trains more than planes but that's the reality. A lot of train foamers and urbanists unironically believe they can replace planes with trains but ignore the whole speed thing.
A huge ass jet like the Airbus A330neo with a bunch of Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines that can allow the aircraft to reach a speed of Mach 0.86 - which is 918 km/h/571 mph - is superior to even the best high speed train in the world.
The average high speed train can only go about 1/3rd that. Impressively, some have had test runs done greatly exceeding 300-350 km/h. The French set two records for going 574.8 and 515.3km/h. The Chinese have set about 4 records between 420-480km/h and Spain and Italy have 2 more that are in the upper 300's which is good, but not that much higher than the average speed of 300-350. The records don't really mean anything though, because you can't realistically expect to have trains with the technology we use to transport people at those speeds.
Japan has the SCMaglev which has hit 603km/h and can actually be used safely. They're building a line using that and both the US and Australia are looking into it (Japan even promised to build 40 kilometers of free maglev tech between Baltimore and DC kek) but with the way things work there, I doubt anyone will see that sort of stuff there in their lives.
