Alright guys, have some (You)s
>>1900558>How do you know if this is a good career path for youtry it, of course
>>1900026>how much experience is needed if you want to work on deep sea / international vessels? I mean, if you get a four year academy degree you can almost certainly work as an AB on some kind of oceangoing vessel. If you want to work as an officer that's gonna take longer.

>>1899890>advice for zoomers? am I strong enough?New guys often think sailing is like being a SpecOps commando or something. No one cares what your 40 yard dash time is or if you can tear a phone book in half with your hands. Real predictors of success are things like: do you need to be told not to sit around on your phone all the time? do you whine about not getting enough sleep? do you become psychologically disturbed after being away from land and family for 30 days or more? Do you have the barest modicum of common sense? Yes, you have to do some hard work once and a while. But for the most part, it all boils down to this: MENTAL STABILITY. Can you be stuck in a confined space with a bunch of assholes for weeks or months, away from civilization, not get a lot of sleep, have to clean toilets, chip rust, get dirty... and not become a surly jerk yourself? Beyond a certain basic level competency (which you're probably smart enough to learn), it's really mostly about living for long periods in conditions of isolation, repetitive work, boredom, and sleep deprivation. If you can handle that, you will make it. I encourage you to go for it.
