>>1253276>>1253276It's somewhat difficult but in many cases people speak a few words of english so you can get by, and some speak well enough you can actually have conversations. I actually had a really fun time in bars having conversations via google translate though. As for finding things, it depends on what you're looking for, but some simple phrases like "arimasu ka" which is "do you have" are super helpful. Restaurants are easy to find (when there are any,) same with convenience stores. Sometimes it was hard to find bike shops that were equipped to deal with anything but Mamacharis, but I'm a mechanic so the only trouble there was finding tubes or pumps with gauges to get my pressure topped up right.
