If you have a chain with a master link, you need to have new master links to replace the one you're removing since they're not recommended to re-use.
Furthermore cleaning a chain that's not on the bike is more difficult than cleaning it on the bike, unless you have an actual solvent bath to do that in. Most people don't have any such thing in their garage, and many anons here don't even have a garage at all to start with.
Meanwhile chain cleaners intended for cleaning the chain on the bike are not bad at all. This one does a pretty good job, given the right solvent.
Of course I imagine someone like you uses some shitty water-based 'degreaser' that ruins your chain anyway, reducing it's useful lifespan to a fraction of what it could be, encouraging rust, and leaving behind a residue that just attracts more dirt, so given your apparent ignorance of the subject I'd say you have no room to be judging anyone.
