The visibility around smoke also depends on vertical mixing; if it’s stable and smooth out the visibility will drop, whereas if the atmosphere is unstable it will mix vertically and improve lateral visibility, to a point. That was a smooth flight, and a very clear layer of smoke existed on the way.
