When I ride the full tour I'm on my Triban RC520 which now has fenders for the winter.

Just do yourself a favour and ride with fenders on your bike.
I also like the idea to ride beater bikes so I can leave them at the train station during the day and night. I don't even lock my beater bikes at home or at work which actually saves time.

Nah, I don't like cars and I haven't had one for years. Traffic would be silly too. It takes the same time going the 22km by car or bike when you consider the city traffic.
I had a different job some years ago. It was a very short commute but it went up a ridiculous hill. My coworkers gave me the nickname "bicycle" because I rode it daily.
