Even look on the current world rally circuit, yes, they are much further removed from the consumer equivelants, but they're still all economy cars, the fucking yaris.
I don't think there's really any more soulful thing to do in a car than be a retarded teenager and hooning some shitbox either.
I think you can be an auto-enthusiast and be broadly against cars socially but you're basically riding the coattails of a dying phenomena, it's not sustainable, and a lot of what your thing comes from is that society wide focus on cars.
