Hybrid bikes make sense when the bike is some $200-400 pos and will be ridden super casual. At that price you're just gonna get an alum frame with v-brakes and 7 speed freewheel, which is fine for casual riding.
Why would you buy a $1k hybrid bike though? I'd rather buy a xc hardtail with an airfork and put 700c tires on it, avoid getting a flatbar, and then it's not much heavier but you can do all the thing on it. I bought a trek marlin and my friend picked up a trek fx3 disc, we swap bikes time to time and his has a carbon fork, but I don't quite understand the purpose of his bike. His bike feels a little more nimble but you're sitting upright, where as my xc bike I'm bent over and in a better riding position for going fast. And he won't hop curbs in town because he's scared of breaking his fork.
