The shift to light green was likely due to shitty clearcoat that yellowed over time, and it became popular for some reason. Although, when they were still painted in Italy, the color would differ slightly from day to day depending on how drunk the person mixing the paints in the morning was, so maybe the cruddy green happened on a really bad morning and they just went with it.
