A helmet is synonymous with the activity of cycling, no one thinks you look weird in a helmet unless you don't have a bike with you, or the helmet is a terrible fit (in which case it's not going to protect you).
You look as weird as a track driver in a flameproof suit, a boxer wearing gloves or a football player in armour - aka not at all. I get more odd looks in my country when I forget to wear a helmet.
