>>987455Well, after the breaking up of JNR the JR Group of companies were still under some government control through Japan Railway Construction Public Corporation (currently it is Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency aka JRTT after it was formed through a merger of JRCC and Corporation for Advanced Transport and Technology in 2003). The following is pretty much the current status for the 7 JR Group companies in terms of ownership
JR East: IPO in 1993, completely privatized in 2002 after JRCC sold its remaining shares
JR Central: IPO in 1997, completely privatized in 2006 after JRTT sold its remaining shares
West JR: IPO in 1996, completely privatized in 2004 after JRTT sold its remaining shares
JR Kyushu: Planned IPO this year, owned by JRTT
JR Hokkaido/Shikoku/Freight: Owned by JRTT
So basically the JRTT / the governement is still on hook
