>>1796143>What? People like driving? This cannot be! How do I resolve this? ...only subhumans like driving! That's right!>>1796130>Most people would prefer a 15 min train ride and a 5 min walk than a 50 min drive.Probably, but 50 minute commutes are rare. According to U.S. census data there's no city that has more than a quarter of its commuters that have >45 minute commutes beyond just a small handful at the very top, and it doesn't distinguish between driving and utilizing trains (guarantee that the super-commuters in NYC and Washington DC take trains), nor does it assume that everyone is going the same direction.
That being said, I've maintained that most light rail lines are a victim of their own success. If you look at both Houston and Dallas, they started with one line that actually was a modest success with high ridership-per-mile numbers. This eventually led to the system being expanded, but the new lines mostly just cannibalized bus lines and had comparatively had abysmal numbers, causing the ridership per mile to plummet, and make light rail an extremely hard sell to other cities.
