Imagine you have long segment of your rail system, you can add a small "handle shaped" auxiliary track (maybe even somewhat big) and use for wagons coming in both directions at the same time, near the time of what would be a frontal collision, one of the wagons goes into the "handle" while the other goes straight into the end of the line.
This requires both wagons to be nearly at the same speed and a very good coordination between them, but it increases the overall capacity of the tracks a lot.
