I'm in the process of cleaning and servicing an old Shimano cup and cone BB, there is no pitting at all in the cups and the caged bearings seem to be in almost perfect condition. I was going to just reassamble it when I remembered I have a stash of brand new bearings in several sizes, picrel shows a new bearing nest to the caged ones, does that look the same? I don't want to risk damaging the cages by freeing a bearing to get a better look. If these bearings are correct how many should I use, I read that more loose bearings are better than fewer caged due to the sharing of the load.
Also am I right in thinking the slightly longer spindle arm is for the drive side? I dropped it when removing and didn't get a chance to note the orientation.
