I get one guess: need for cashiers made it unecononical? Here we switched to articulated trams (with those coffee mill controllers still) and retained cashiers for some time, while the "bogie cars" had driver selling enter front of the motor car - cashier enter rear of the trailer system and when cashiers left, the bogie cars continued to operate solo only, always enter front. In 2018 driver ticket selling was abandoned when the newer high capacity trams became the norm.
Traveling ticket inspectors and stiff fines keep fare evasion on acceptable levels. Ticket machines, widely available contacless single use cars and the phone app have made the need for driver cash selling in trams less required for service, now the transit authority can properly do something for the slowness of the system - it should expand to suburbs in major ways in near future.
