>>1390898Belgium has a urban pop of 98%
Denmark of 88%
France of 80%
Italy of 70%
Japan of 92%
Netherlands of 91%
UK of 83%
and wait for it.
The United States has 82%
-according to world bank data from 2018.
so the the percentage of urban population in the US is not considerably higher than countries that are considered "biking paradises".
even if you compare the topography it doesn't seem to be the key factor. Japan has a rather difficult one but biking is doing fine compared with the west cost that is comparable in size and has a better topography.
the culture and resulting infrastructure seem to be the key factors.
the population centers in the US as a whole are far more spread out compared to Europe.
the result seems to be a focus on cars and domestic flights just like the narrow form of Japan encouraged trains.
but there is no reason for the coast areas of the us not to develop a bike culture comparable to "bike paradises" in Europe.
