Honestly, you can have all kinds of street layouts that aren't a rigid 90° grid, and still work well for all kinds of transport.

History shows that human populations exhibit exponential growth in phases of industrialization and slow down or even reverse after that. You have birth rates below the level needed to sustain the population in most developed countries. The vast majority of current population growth happens in our current developing and threshold countries. It will stop or go back once those countries are fully industrialized.
