Every city meeting, hoards of elderly and "concerned" middle age white women stand up and cry about "neighborhood character" and "Lost parking spots in front of my house.". Luckily the city council has stood pretty firm on this, and even walked back their quadplex ruling to a triplex. It doesn't help though, no mater what the city concedes, people still complain about something else. You literally cannot win with that crowd. There are several lawsuits in progress. Ironically, many of the opponents will be dead by 2040.
There was a neighborhood here who fought against sidewalks going in, because they didn't want "people walking by their houses." Literally, a neighborhood in the middle of the city, and they're worried about people walking by. So much so that they sued, and won to make sure they wouldn't install sidewalks. As a retaliatory measure though, the city put them at the VERY bottom of the streets repairs list (they had been at the top, the street repairs came with sidewalks) which means it will be another 60 years until the city would be willing to fix their streets.
I do like the mayor a lot. He's the first one we've had who lives in a condo and not in a huge house on one of the lakes. He also bikes everywhere, but so did the previous mayor, Betsy "Bike Lanes" Hodges.
