It was never meant to be a full suspension for downhill, it was meant to provide the seat comfort of a fully without the bobbing of a fully for the cross country races popular at the time. Of course nowadays you can just get a compliant carbon seat post or suspension seat post for much of the same result (perhaps with less travel) at a much lower weight.
