It's one of three rack railway lines in the region, all owned and operated by the Appenzeller bahnen. They're also some of the least profitable lines in Switzerland, and at least one of them will likely be closed in the medium term.
The Walzenhausen line only has that one car which dates from 1958, making it probably the oldest vehicle in regular revenue service in Switzerland.
