To make it bearable for him, we did the short route and i went on this beautifull 1998 Peugeot Performance 5000 i have just inherited and restored from a family member. (Columbus steel and Shimano RSX 7 speed group).
I told him to expect getting dropped early, but I managed to break away from the pack and had him on my wheel for the rest of the ride. And wouldnt you know it, we ended up winning. (mind you with an average speed of only around 30km/h)
All in all, a really great experience for both of us on his first race.
