It is much, much cheaper to maintain roads & highways than to keep transit systems running. In the US, fuel & registration taxes cover the majority of road costs, needing only a small subsidy from other tax sources to operate. In European countries, where the fuel & registration taxes are higher, drivers completely pay for the roads, and end up paying for the transit systems too.
