Rear derailleur on my old Trek broke down. How many components do I need to replace? I think I can buy the component (don't know the englisch term) on ebay, but everything is old as fuck and I might as well replace the whole thing.
Second question: The whole thing happened because I ran over a twig, it got into the derailleur, I didn't realize and kept pedaling and then it just brok. I think it's due to being almost as old as I am. But a few weeks ago I shortened the chain, because it was way too long (it really was, I went over several tutorials on chain lenght and it seems like the prior owner of the bike had no clue about bikes, even though he was a supposed 'mountainbike enthusiast'). Before I did this, I read that the chain could break the derailleur, if it was too short. I think if anything I kept it a little too long, but could that have happened?
