It is up to the individual to think critically for themselves. If they are incapable of doing so, does it really matter if they listen to mainstream or echo chamber views? They will not be self-lead either way. Also, the option of anonymity to the other posters leads people to take their views to the extremes with the knowledge of no repercussions. The alternative is a more moderated forum which has its own problems, like power tripping reddit admins who ban you for wrongthink. You're free to use those kinds of forum though. I think it's pretty innaccurate to call this an echo chamber as well because of the high amount of contrary views we see here. The fact is that we see a lot of contrarianism moreso than actual argumentation. With plenty of people on lots of different sides - from public-transport-only communists to people who hold the view of highways-only-no-poors, it doesn't seem like an echo chamber so much as a competition to see who can be the most contrarian and divisive.
As this is the meta thread I'd also like to deliver my requests:
- For everyone's benefit, split bikes into their own board because I don't think anybody would be against that either the bikeposters or the transit/aerospace/maritime posters.
- Make a sticky telling people to go to /o/ for cars and to go to generals like /bbg/, /bqg/, /upg/ etc.
