Blackmail is also an option but relies on you having compromising information.
A relatively new and effective tactic is to figure out how to portray opponents of the thing you want as racist/sexist/transphobic/etc. etc. and assemble an army of outraged twitter trannies to bully the politicians into compliance. Knowing some bluechecks or journalists will be helpful here.
