also when you start up a climb you can't power up the start standing and slowly move through your gears as you gradually lose momentum, you have to sit to change, and kinda lose your impetus all at once.

what you mean technically or aesthetically?

they're -relatively- similar aesthetically to the brake levers that just a higher tier of shogun would have been specced with back in that era. Back in the day, cheap bikes got bare metal levers with suicide flat bar extensions, and nicer road bikes got levers with rubber hoods.

It's an ergonomic thing.
