Let's get one thing out of the way: modern bikes are not the same as vintage ones. Modern ones have a bottom bracket considerably higher than the old ones - around 4cm actually. All other things being equal my shitty old vintage bike's seat would be a whopping 4cm lower than on my new, nice modern bike. Which one is more comfortable on longer distances? Now take into consideration that riders didn't slam their stem back in the day (there were exceptions) and the seat height was (generally lower).
If you take Eddy Merckx as an example, yeah, my point does not apply, but cmon, at least see where I'm coming from here.
