I'm from Huntsville AL and right down the street from where I live there was a ww2 era airbase built in 1942 that was converted into the city's commercial airport in 44. It operated with airline and general aviation until the late 60s, when the current Huntsville International airport was built a few miles Southwest of the city. The local autocross meets were held on the remnants of the runways until a few years ago, along with some car shows and fairs. The city's high school club soccer fields are set up all around the old airport, so I spent a fair amount of time on and around the runway, imagining what it was like when it still operated. There's also a really badass museum right next to the field that has a bunch of really old military equipment and vehicles, including several Sherman's and armored vehicles, some of the really rare variants of Jeeps, and a few helicopters and airplanes. Recently most of the runway was finally torn up and paved over with asphalt and parking lots to be developed into a shopping center or something. It makes me really sad to see the last bit of airport finally disappear.
