This is exactly my point - it doesnt need to be a dense area like germany to have decently built cities and decent public transport connections. If you take kansas, 75% of the population are in urban areas. There are a lot of empty areas there, but most people are packed into the big cities. If these cities were allowed to develop naturally rather than "planned" into emptyness, they could support thriving communities
