>>1023104>>1023094>>1023062Really, the name comes from around the turn of the 20th century. Maine used to be the hot place for America's megawealthy to summer. Portland, Belgrade Lakes, Moosehead, Acadia all hosted huge mansions to small camps for the more modest tourist. Teddy Roosevelt was a big fan of Maine. His famous Moose-riding photo was taken there. His summer home was on Campobello island, about as far east as you can go.
People took the rail from Philadelphia, New York and Boston all the way up. It's a shame, pic related is one of my favorite maps. It's from 1927, our rail system is a shadow of what it used to be. Anyway, you can see the title on it - Vacationland
