>>1941318I ride a heavy '90s MTB which until recently had stock 26x2.10 knobbies. I switched to 26x1.95 with lower-profile knobs. The results were dramatic. On a 21.5-mile road course with about 575 feet of climbs, I increased my average speed from 14.0 to 15.3 MPH. I'd attribute the 9% speed gain more to the treads than the nominal 0.15" tire width. The road noise was significanly less, and I didn't have to drop to as low gears on climbs as I did previously. Now I'm looking at even narrower slicks.
