I was a dirt poor student back then so I always took a seat ticket (and those were shitty non reclining in 6 pax compartments).
The somewhat outdated UIC-Z cattle car they'd almost always marshal at the tail of the train did however have a nice big open platform at one of its end, theoretically for bike or ski storage but I never saw it used as anything other than the "youth area" for beer drinking, playing card games or werewolves or whatever and, when there was certainty the guard was sleeping, smoking.
I'd just lay my bag on the floor and sleep there using my coat as a blanket, (once lullabied to sleep by a cutie violin player, kinda wish I would've, though she was definitely the crazy kind). Never bothered anyone.
It was nice. In a way that's only nice when you're 20 I guess.
