REM system was proposed in 2016, phase 1 is set to open next year (delayed a year due to lockdowns) with phase 2 and 3 set to open in 2023 and 2024. Despite not even being open yet 3 expansions to it and two entire new lines (one is marked as a "tram" on pic related but has been changed to an REM line) are already planned. Current construction is 6.9 billion Cad, REM de l'Est is set to cost 10 billion Cad, REM du Sud will likely be much cheaper then either per mile due to entirely being built above highways and freeways with absolutely no tunnelling or overwater bridges needed. On top of all that there's talk of the REM Est being expanded to Lasalle, and both it and the expansions of the REM in Laval will be each end of the new cross city rapid bus transit line.
At this point I think it's safe to say that, with one line of Exo eaten, it's only a matter of time before the other 5 EXO lines have an REM system built next to or above the existing rail or nearby highways to completely replace the EXO network. The Saint-Jérôme line is perfect for replacing with an REM system that goes up and down the grass partition on Highway 15, and the rest of the lines are in perfect positions to have an REM line built parallel or above them, opening up more rush hour times for cargo and intercity rail. Private rail works.
