The area I was riding in today was very icy. Much worse than where I took this picture. Well all the side streets are near 100% ice now, but some ice is worse. The stuff in the picture was brown ice with a textured surface. The other area was clear ice which is much smoother and slick. At least it was lumpy clear ice so the studs had edges to grab onto.
I've noticed road layout affects how icy an area gets. In a grid the roads are usually decent mid-block, then get worse as you approach the intersections. Spaghetti road layout has drivers doing a lot more stopping and starting, so the sliding / spinning tires shine up the ice.
