A rigid hybrid bike is better than a cheap mountain bike since you can mount fenders and racks on the hybrid easier and they're faster than euro-style commuter bikes so for general riding I think it's a very good option, but they've earned a bad reputation from many hybrid bikes having a really bad coil suspension fork (heavy and does hardly any damping), the cheapest possible drivetrains, heavy components and I sometimes see that bike manufacturers still put mechanical disc brakes on hybrid bikes even though there really is no reason to do that.
