I'll show you why.
Make two fists, with your knuckles lined up horizontally. Hold them out in front of you, with your elbows bent and splayed out to the side. That's what holding a flat bar is like.
(you should always have a bend in your elbows on a bike so that your arms act as shock absorbers)
Now line your knuckles up vertically and hold them out in front of you, again with a bend in your elbows. Your elbows should splay down. That's what holding the primary position on drop bars is like.
It should be pretty obvious which is the more natural and comfortable way for your arms to be for long periods of time. Now add to that, the fact that drop bars give you 4+ different hand positions to switch between, instead of one.
