Most racktops are around 350mm
I'd guess your bag was around 700mm.
A wald 157 is 533mm for example. That's far less sturdy than something a little larger zip tied on a rear rack.
Especially if you snip holes in the basket so it can poke out over the front and the back of the rack.
This is really just to avoid bungeying it to your rack top. Which many people do. A basket will make your life MUCH easier.
You could also do a much smaller, taller, basket and stand the bag up vertically in it, possibly also strapping it to your saddle.
