There's hope that it'll get nicer (even though the commercial space is not likely to shrink) within the next decade while being reconstructed to become part of RailBaltica european gauge line.
Our northern neighbours have a terminal station in their capital though. And some newer trains.

What was a mistake was the USSR itself, but that's what history is like. Mistakes happen.
