I would imagine these things had the power and even a decent enough of an aerodynamic design to hit these speeds. I'm guessing it's all that rotating and reciprocating mass along with hammer blow that were the biggest impediments.
I would love to know what the forces were compared to say, an F1 engine from the V8 era.
