What I know, is that I lied for taking hard ADHD meds as late as 8th grade and I've been flying with a medical for six years.
What Im saying is, you can get boned on both routes. It can take years, thousands of $$$$, and dozens of hours and stress on your life for the possibility of them just denying your medical or just having you give up thru attrition. I've had 2 students go through this and it's always a massive ordeal, both have taken over a year for any sort of progress. Alternatively, lie and get started today, with the risk of them finding out later. I took the latter and it worked out.
This is just me though. Everyone's circumstances are unique, definitely consult someone wiser than an a/n/on
