Maybe if you plan it right, end your trip by returning to Tokyo on the Sunrise Seto/Izumo in which case you save a night of accomodation expense too, (if you can snag a nobinobi and if as mentioned in an earlier post you don't mind sleeping on essentially concrete).
Think I got around 250k yen and change value out of a three week pass last trip by going over the place from Fukuyama to Abashiri and many places in between.
