The degree bit is probably just some baby boomer era relic requirement and it's useless to argue with them about that. If some company would help pay the expense to get such a costly piece of paper I'd highly consider that offer, but on my own doesn't feel it's worth 100k+.
Least in the US seems like a degree is more like a burden than a advantage for a lot of Americans if people my age and younger are gonna spend decades on average paying the damn thing off.
