Anyone tried jury-rigging MTB trigger shifters onto road bikes?
I've got a 3x8 road bike that could use some updates, chainrings need replacing as well as the rear derailleur, but I'm feeling kinda limited by 8 speed gear choices.
An initial plan:
- slap trigger shifter onto either one of those accessory extension bars, or pic related
- turn 3x crankset into 1x on the cheap by getting a narrow wide chainring
- get 10 speed cassette and deore derailer/shifter for the rear
deore derailleur with 42t capacity: 36€
deore 10 sp shifter: 19€
10 sp chain: 20€
10 sp 11-42 cassette: 50€
chink chainring: 20€
150€ for the whole thing, the cost of some advent x brifters.
as far as I'm aware, 10 speed cassettes fit 8/9 speed road bike freehubs, right? this should all work together, provided I can find a satisfactory place to stick the shifter at, no?
