my first cheapo mtb with 1.95" felt like a pitchfork regarding damping, more expensive one late didnt have that feeling. Buzz damping is definetly a thing in mtb, even with bigger tires. Its hard to compare modern alu with steel since I never had a butted steel mtb or alu road bike.
