>>1404809It really depends on your local conditions, for 7-8cm of snow (very little) then a fatbike won't actually help you since there's not enough snow to get packed into a firm layer, so all you need is a tire slightly wider than usual (because you're not going to be able to avoid all the small rocks and bumps that you can when riding over the same ground without snow). For riding on pavement with just a little bit of snow even 23mm road tires can be just fine since the tires cut through the snow and grip the pavement underneath.
Studs are strictly for ice - if there's no ice they do nothing but make lots of noise and slow you down, but when there is a layer of slick ice than studs transform your bike and let you ride across surfaces and slopes that you couldn't even walk across without falling - I live in a hilly city and on days with really bad ice conditions I routinely ride casually past cars and trucks that are stuck on icy slopes as if there was no ice at all...
