The saving grace here might be that American loading guage is so much larger than British loading guage that 20th Century and later American 1/48 scale equipment will still look massive compared to 1/43 scale British equipment. American O guage three railers have the even crazier issue of "traditional" toy trains, "semiscale," which can either mean a scale model with reduced detail OR a non scale toy with fine scale level of realistic detail, and three rail scale, which is scale with provisions to run on the ridiculously tight curves of three rail O guage track.
